Living With a Water-Cooled Pad: Water, Cleaning, Noise

By the Good Sleep team · 2026-10-22

Pouring water from a pitcher, like topping up a water-cooled mattress pad

TL;DR: fill the reservoir once at setup, top it up now and then, keep the pad under your fitted sheet, spot-clean it, and flush the lines before storing it. That's the routine Good Sleep publishes for its system. Expect a gentle hum from the hub.

01Setup

  1. Lay the topper on your mattress and hook the elastic corner straps underneath.
  2. Fill the hub's reservoir (about 2 minutes for Good Sleep) and connect the hose.
  3. Plug in, set your temperature, and sleep. Good Sleep says most people are running in under 10 minutes.

02Distilled or tap water?

Always follow your own system's manual. Many manufacturers of water-based sleep systems recommend distilled water because it leaves fewer mineral deposits in pumps and channels. Good Sleep's published care instructions cover topping up and flushing; check your setup guide or ask Good Sleep support for its water recommendation.

04Storage and travel

Before storing or traveling, flush the water lines with the included air pump. Good Sleep includes a padded travel case for the topper.

05Noise

Any water system has a pump. Good Sleep describes its hub as quieter than a ceiling fan. Place the hub on the floor or a nightstand where the hose reaches without strain; a rug underneath can soften vibration on hard floors.

06Will it leak?

Leaks are the worry everyone has. Inspect hose connections at setup, don't kink the hose, and keep the hub where it won't be kicked. The 1-year warranty on Good Sleep's hub, topper and hose covers failures.
